Skimming

The Full Story - Skimming

Skimming

Skimming is a plastering technique that involves applying a thin finishing coat of plaster (typically 1-2mm thick) over a surface to achieve a perfectly smooth, paint-ready finish.

Process: The skim coat is applied using a plastering trowel to the prepared surface. For plasterboard, the joints between the boards are first taped and jointed to ensure a continuous, flat wall before the entire surface is skimmed. The process requires precision to avoid imperfections and generally takes less time to dry than traditional plastering.

Purpose: The primary goal is aesthetic refinement. It covers imperfections, creates a durable and smooth surface for painting or wallpapering, and adds a superior finish compared to simply painting directly onto taped and jointed plasterboard.
